Why set up your own supported living
Every one of the projects JMS Trust has supported is unique – much like the young people whom they have been created around. But what brings them all together is a shared desire from parents to see their young people happy, settled and living a good life. They have sought to make this vision a reality before any crisis has forced their hand and restricted them to taking the first option offered by the local authority. Each family has worked to empower themselves and their young people to choose where they live and what the future looks like for them.
Families sum up why they started this journey:
We wanted an extremely high quality of life, peace of mind for parents and a secure home for life. The project was borne out of very difficult circumstances with failed placements, closed care homes or poor provision. Our worst fears were therefore already realized, and the project was about overcoming the major issues such as safeguarding problems and 28 day notices to move.
A project like this is rare, so it was difficult to look at any previous tried and tested models for supporting individuals with more complex learning disabilities. All existing frameworks e.g. Positive Behaviour Support, CQC regulations seemed to lack true person-centred planning and didn’t advocate for the lifelong learning and developmental focus that we had. It is for this reason, that we felt we were undertaking a unique and pioneering project.
